General Questions

If you have sensitive teeth, there are several things you can do to help alleviate the discomfort and sensitivity. These include:

Use a toothpaste designed for sensitive teeth: There are several toothpaste brands available that are specifically designed for people with sensitive teeth. These toothpastes contain ingredients that help to desensitize the teeth and reduce sensitivity over time.

Use a soft-bristled toothbrush: Brushing with a soft-bristled toothbrush can help prevent further damage to the tooth enamel and reduce sensitivity.

Avoid acidic foods and drinks: Foods and drinks that are high in acid can erode the tooth enamel and make the teeth more sensitive. Try to avoid or limit your consumption of acidic foods and drinks such as citrus fruits, sodas, and sports drinks.

Use a fluoride rinse: Rinsing your mouth with a fluoride rinse can help strengthen the tooth enamel and reduce sensitivity.

Practice good oral hygiene: Regular brushing and flossing can help remove plaque and prevent gum disease, which can contribute to tooth sensitivity.

Consider dental treatments: If your tooth sensitivity is severe or persistent, your dentist may recommend treatments such as fluoride varnish, bonding agents, or in-office desensitizing treatments.

It’s important to speak with your dentist and hygienist about your tooth sensitivity to determine the underlying cause and the most appropriate treatment options.

Wisdom teeth, also known as third molars, are located at the back of the mouth and typically emerge in the late teens or early twenties. While some people may have enough room in their mouth for their wisdom teeth to grow in properly, many others may experience problems that require the teeth to be removed. Here are some reasons why we may need to remove wisdom teeth:

Crowding: Wisdom teeth can cause crowding and misalignment of the other teeth in the mouth, which can lead to bite problems and difficulty cleaning the teeth properly.

Impacted teeth: Wisdom teeth can become impacted, which means they are unable to emerge fully or at all due to lack of space or improper positioning. This can cause pain, swelling, infection, and damage to surrounding teeth and bone.

Decay and gum disease: Wisdom teeth are located at the back of the mouth, which can make them difficult to clean properly. This can lead to an increased risk of tooth decay and gum disease, which can affect the health of the other teeth in the mouth.

Cysts and tumors: In rare cases, wisdom teeth can develop cysts or tumors, which can damage the jawbone, teeth, and other structures in the mouth.

Orthodontic treatment: If a person is undergoing orthodontic treatment, their wisdom teeth may need to be removed to prevent them from interfering with the alignment of the other teeth.

Overall, the decision to remove wisdom teeth depends on a variety of factors, including the position, size, and shape of the teeth, as well as the person’s oral health and overall well-being. Your dentist or oral surgeon can help determine whether or not wisdom teeth removal is necessary in your specific case.

TMJ stands for temporomandibular joint, which is the joint that connects the jawbone to the skull. TMJ disorder, also known as TMD, refers to a group of conditions that cause pain and dysfunction in the jaw joint and surrounding muscles.

The exact cause of TMJ disorder is often unknown, but there are several factors that can contribute to its development, including:

Jaw injury: Trauma to the jaw, such as a blow or impact, can damage the temporomandibular joint and lead to TMJ disorder.

Bruxism: Bruxism is the habit of grinding or clenching the teeth, which can put excessive pressure on the jaw joint and cause TMJ disorder.

Arthritis: Arthritis can cause inflammation and damage to the joint tissues, which can lead to TMJ disorder.

Misaligned teeth: Misaligned teeth can affect the bite and put extra strain on the jaw joint, leading to TMJ disorder.

Stress: Stress can cause muscle tension in the jaw and face, which can contribute to TMJ disorder.

Symptoms of TMJ disorder include pain or tenderness in the jaw joint, clicking or popping sounds when opening or closing the mouth, difficulty chewing or opening the mouth fully, and headaches or earaches. Treatment for TMJ disorder may include lifestyle modifications, such as stress reduction and dietary changes, as well as dental treatments like bite adjustment, orthodontic treatment, or the use of a night guard to prevent teeth grinding.

A nightguard appliance is a custom-fitted dental device that is worn over the teeth during sleep to help manage symptoms of TMJ disorder. It is typically made of a hard or soft material, and fits over the upper or lower teeth to help reduce the amount of grinding or clenching that occurs during sleep.

Nightguards can help with TMJ disorder in several ways:

Reducing clenching and grinding: Nightguards provide a protective barrier between the teeth, which can help reduce the amount of clenching or grinding that occurs during sleep. This can help relieve pressure on the jaw joint and reduce TMJ-related pain and discomfort.

Stabilizing the bite: Nightguards can also help stabilize the bite by keeping the teeth in a more natural, relaxed position. This can help reduce the amount of strain on the jaw muscles and joints, which can contribute to TMJ disorder.

Preventing tooth damage: Over time, clenching and grinding can wear down the tooth enamel and cause chipping or cracking. Nightguards help protect the teeth from this damage and preserve their structural integrity.

Promoting muscle relaxation: Nightguards can help promote muscle relaxation in the jaw and surrounding muscles, which can reduce tension and alleviate TMJ-related pain.

It’s important to note that nightguards are not a cure for TMJ disorder, but rather a way to manage symptoms and prevent further damage. They are typically used in conjunction with other treatments, such as lifestyle modifications, physical therapy, or medication, to help manage the condition. If you suspect you have TMJ disorder, it’s important to consult with your dentist or a TMJ specialist to determine the most appropriate treatment plan for your needs.
